Just Like Molly
A silent film

INT. CHILD’S PLAYROOM. DAY

We see a set up of dolls and puppets on the floor of a child's room. A number of puppets and dolls sit in chairs facing a miniature stage. Among them is a blond haired Barbie doll and the puppet of a man dressed in gray. In center stage, the child positions a dark haired girl puppet. A red ribbon takes the shape of a small bow in her hair. In the back off to the side of the stage, the child sets a dark-skinned boy doll with dreadlocks. The girl puppet starts dancing around the stage in twirls, jumps, and jigs. As she curtsies her finish, the camera zooms in on the red ribbon.

INT. HOUSE. NOON

As soon as the ribbon fills the screen, a hand sweeps it aside. The shot jumps back to reveal a girl absentmindedly fidgeting with a red ribbon tied into her dark hair. She is looking out a window with a slightly anxious look on her face. Outside the window, a front yard is seen with a small tree to the right and a driveway with a mailbox alongside to the left. The girl's expression relaxes a little as a mail truck arrives.

EXT. HOUSE. NOON

The mail truck stops outside the house and leaves to go to the next one as the girl races out the front door towards the mailbox. While carrying the mail into the house, the girl flips through the material and finds a letter addressed to her.

INT. HOUSE. NOON

After taking a breath, the girl steadily rips open the letter and proceeds to read. A close up of the message reveals that it's a callback for a play. She gives a small sigh of relief. New hope and determination manifest themselves in the girl's growing smile. Tossing the letter aside in a burst of energy, the girl rushes down a hall and into a bedroom where she starts digging through a small closet.
A long mirror hangs on a door opened inward into a living room. In the background to the left, a person lounges on a couch near the center of the room watching an old-fashioned TV set that sits on the floor. The girl stands in front of the mirror with a change of clothes and studies her reflection. Shaking her head, she leaves and comes back dressed differently. After changing her clothes a couple of more times, she settles with a simple blouse and skirt, keeping the ribbon in her hair.

EXT. CITY STREETS. DAY

With the callback letter in hand, the girl stands outside of a three story building and is watching passersby. A dark-skinned boy with short dreadlocks runs up to her. In his hand is a letter resembling the girl's. They greet each other with a friendly hug and walk into the nearby building while chatting excitedly with each other.

INT. THEATER. DAY

In the back of the large room is a simple and bare stage. A few fold-up chairs are set up behind a long table and face the stage. Props, tools, and half finished projects clutter the rest of the space. A number of people are gathered around the stage conversing, reading to themselves, or acting out bits of play. The girl and boy approach a couple people and exchange greetings. A blond girl with a picture-perfect facade then walks over to the small group with a slight smirk on her face. A faint air of snootiness marks every move she makes as she introduces herself to the group. Regardless, the group happily talks with the blond.
A man in a gray jacket gets up on the stage behind the group and raises his hands, motioning everyone to settle down and get situated for the event. He reads from a clipboard in his hand and points to the girl. Everyone else either sits on the foldable chairs or stands beside the stage. The lights go dim as a spotlight hits the stage with the girl standing on it. CUT-

INT. THEATER. EVENING

The girl is sitting on a foldable chair near the stage and looks up to see the boy walking off the stage to her left. The blond walks past him and onto the stage while he goes over to the girl. An optimistic grin is on his face despite looking worn out.

EXT. CITY STREETS. NOON

The next day, the girl and the boy are walking into to the building where a large group of people are gathered by the stage. In the center of the group is the man with the gray jacket standing on a foldable chair. He is in the process of going over a list in his hands. The boy and the girl join the group. Noticing the boy, the man gives him a quick nod of approval. The boy's hopeful look breaks into that of joy. The girl smiles too, but it evaporates into nervousness.
The large group slowly breaks up as the man in grey goes down the list until he finally stops and gets off of the chair. The girl catches up with him and talks to him. He looks at his list for a couple of seconds. Then he looks at the girl with a small amount of sympathy showing on his face and shakes his head. Disbelief and sadness run across the girl's face as she watches the man make his way to the stage. On the stage stand the boy and the blond, surrounded by people shaking their hands and patting them on the back.

INT. HOUSE.

The shot backtracks to the house the girl came from and moves into the living room where the old TV continues to play for a deserted couch. Zooming in on the TV, we see the child from the beginning of the film with the same puppets and dolls. The girl puppet and boy doll have new outfits and the stage is filled with miniature props and decorations. The boy doll and the girl puppet twirl and jump around the stage. The puppets and dolls sitting before the stage have their hands placed together as the child closes a curtain over the stage. The picture fades as the title of the show "Molly" is displayed before its credits.
Something I made for film class.
